Procedure When Applying for a Learners
Licence
- Learner’s licences are in three categories -
- Code A, A1 - Motor Cycle
- Code B, EB - Light Motor Vehicle
- Code C, C1, EC1, EC - Heavy Motor Vehicle
- There are age restrictions on each class of learners licence.
- Applicants need to be 16 years and older for a Code A1 learners.
- Applicants need to be 17 years and older for a Code A, B, and EB learners.
- Applicants need to be 18 years and older for a Code C, C1, EC1 and EC learners.
- The applicant needs to come in personally with a valid identity document, 2 photographs and the prescribed fee of R100.00.

The applicant, on arrival at the test centre needs to complete a blue LL1 application form and undertake an eye test before his/her booking can be confirmed.

On the day of the test the applicant needs to bring his/her test fee receipt he/she received when booking for the test, a valid identity document or temporary identity document, an additional R40.00 for the issue of the learners licence if he/she is successful. Applicants who pass their test must be issued with a learners licence on the same day of the test.
IT MUST BE NOTED THAT IF APPLICANTS ARRIVE LATE OR WITHOUT THE ABOVE DOCUMENTATION THEY WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO WRITE AND WILL FORFEIT ANY FEES PAID.

Procedure When Applying for A Drivers
Licence

- An applicant needs to be in possession of a valid identity document and a valid
learners’ licence when booking for his/her drivers test. The applicant needs to
complete the green BL1/DL1 application form and pay the prescribed fee.
- On the day of the test the applicant needs to bring with him, his valid learners licence, valid identity document, 4 photographs and the prescribed fee of R145.00 for the issue of the drivers licence. The applicant needs to undertake an eye test before undertaking this drivers test. If the applicant is successful he needs to have his/her fingerprints taken before applying for the card type drivers licence. The applicant is issued with a temporary drivers licence, which is valid for six months.
- An applicant needs to uplift his temporary drivers licence on the same day as the test, failing which, he needs to undertake another test.
- The applicant is notified via post when his card has arrived and is required to bring a valid identity document, temporary identity document or a valid temporary drivers licence to uplift their drivers licence card.

Renewal of Drivers Licence
Description
Your credit card type driver's licence is valid for five years only counting from
the date of issue and needs to be renewed after this time. Although the expiry date
appears on your licence, you will also be sent a renewal notification in the post.
You may renew your licence at any time before it expires. The new licence will be
valid for five years from the date of renewal. To renew your licence, you need to
complete the relevant application form, DL1, at your nearest driving licence testing
centre. You may renew at any driver's license testing centre in the country, but
you will also have to collect your card there.
Steps to follow
Produce acceptable identification as defined by legislation (e.g. Identity Document
(ID), temporary ID, old driver's licence card, valid South African passport)
Two black and white ID photographs
Fees as prescribed by legislation.
Note that you will not be required to take a driver's licence examination. However,
you will have to undergo an eye test. If found that your sight conditions have deteriorated
from the date of the last issue, new conditions will be attached to your licence.

Your renewed driver's licence should be ready in four to six weeks.
Cost
Costs differ from province to province as determined by MECs. Should you require a
temporary licence for the duration of the processing period of your credit card
licence you need to provide one black and white ID photograph.

Procedure When Converting Drivers Licence
to the New Card Format
- An applicant must be the holder of a valid drivers licence before he can apply to
have his/her drivers licence converted to the new card format.
- The applicant needs to come in personally to the test centre, together with a valid
identity document, 2 photographs and the prescribed fee (R105.00 and penalties).
Penalty fees can be obtained from Drivers Licence Centres.
- On arrival at the test centre, the applicant needs to complete a green BL1/DL1 application
form, then undertake an eye test and have his/her fingerprints taken before his/her
application can be processed.
The applicant is notified via the post when his/her card has arrived and they are
required to bring a valid identity document, temporary identity document or a valid
driving licence card to uplift their drivers licence card.

Procedure When Applying for a PRDP (Professional Driving Permit)
- An applicant needs to be the holder of a valid drivers licence when applying for
a PRDP. The applicant can only apply for a PRDP for the code of licence he/she is
the holder of.
- There are three categories for PRDP’s and there are age restrictions in these categories

- An applicant needs to fill in a PD1 form (yellow application form). The applicant
is to go to the doctor for a medical check up. The doctor will fill in the medical
certificate, which he (doctor) needs to sign and stamp. The applicant then needs
to go to his/her nearest police station where their fingerprints are taken and the
forms are retained by the police.
- The applicant returns to the test centre after 6 to 8 weeks to check if his/her
forms have been returned by the police station. If the forms have been returned
by the police station, the applicant needs a valid identity document, 4 passport
size photographs and a fee of R205.00 for the issue of the PRDP.
- The PRDP forms are valid for a period of six months only and if the applicant fails
to process these documents within this period they will become invalid.
- If applicants are converting their licence to the card type licence and applying
for their PRDP at the same time they will have to pay the outstanding penalties
for failing to convert in the required period.
